Description:Arthur Nicholson was born in Leek on July 15th 1842. He was educated at Leek Grammar School, before joining the firm, 'Brough, Nicholson & Co.', where his father Joshua was one of the partners. On 20th September 1882 he married Marianne Falkner of Manchester. The following year he became a J.P., and in 1889 was elected to Staffordshire County Council.
Mr and Mrs Nicholson moved to Highfield Hall in 1885, where they entertained King George and Queen Mary in 1913, when the Royal couple visited Leek.
In 1909 Arthur Nicholson was knighted.
He commissioned the Nicholson Memorial in 1925 to commemmorate the local men lost fighting in World War I, which included his son.
Sir Arthur Nicholson died on 9th February 1929.
