Description:The Congregationalists (previously called the Calvinists) had been worshipping in a chapel in Derby Street since 1690, but in 1791 an angry mob invaded the building, took out the seats and fittings and burned them in the Market Place. In 1830 the Congregationalists were known to be holding their services in a room in The Black's Head. The corner stone of the church was laid by Mr John Brough in 1862, and it was opened for service on 22nd Decemebr 1863. The cost of the church was about £5,000.
