Description:The Smithfield Cattle Market was opened in 1871 and closed in the early 1990s. Before this, livestock was sold in the town centre. Heywoods and Sons, an estate agent, ran the auctions in the 1930s and acted as manager for the site. The market was replaced by a Safeway supermarket which later became Morrisons.
