Description:Two Armitage women who worked as bus or tram conductresses or 'clippies' in Birmingham during the First World War. The badges on their hats include the Stafford Knot and look very similar to cap badges worn by the North Staffordshire Regiment.
On the left is Edith Maud Dawkin (1897-1924) whose family lived in Mount Pleasant, Armitage. Edith married George Adams, who had been a regular soldier and Sergeant in the Warwickshire Regiment, in 1920 On the right is Edith's best friend Esther ‘Hetty’ Leigh (1898-1968) whose family lived in Old Road, Armitage. She married David Johnson in 1923. Esther Johnson’s family ran Armitage Newsagents Store in New Road in the 1950s and 1960s. Both women married at Kings Norton two years apart so that may be where they were living during the War.
