In 1914 a report was written regarding damage caused by Halmerend mines at Bignall End, relating to Victoria Place. This suggests one reason for the condition of the buildings by the 1960s could be due to underground workings making the buildings unstable. Also by the 1960s the mining industry had declined so the need for housing lessened. Victoria Place, which was located off Heathcote Road, is now called Victoria Avenue.
