Hilton Main Colliery started production on 30 September 1924 with an output of around 350,000 tons. The pit remained in production until 31 January 1969 at which time local faulting of the 'Eight Foot' seam made extraction of the coal using modern mechanised face production uneconomic. The colliery site was redeveloped as Hilton Main Industrial Estate in 1980.
