Description:An attendance certificate for Alfred Wood, a pupil at North Street Infants's School, Stafford. At the time he was aged 5 and was living with his parents, William and Annie wood and seven siblings at 1, Sash Street.

On leaving school he worked as an errand boy and then as a shop assistant at Messrs. Watkins, Price and Webb's grocers on Eastgate Street, Stafford. Following the outbreak of World War I he joined the North Staffordshire Regiment and was soon drafted to Ireland when the rebellion broke out. While he was there he was promoted to lance-corporal. He arrived in France in February 1917 and was made full corporal. He was killed in action in France by a shell explosion on 30 November 1917, aged 22.
