Description:High Bridge is Bridge no. 60 and crosses the Trent and Mersey Canal close to the graveyard of St. John the Baptist Church, Armitage The bridge is Grade II listed. It accommodates a pathway and on the right of this view on its far side, parallel to and dropping down to the canal bank, is a sharp right turn which now leads to a foot tunnel under the railway embankment to a foot bridge over the River Trent leading to fields and Mavesyn Ridware. Around the time of this photograph the number of rail tracks was doubled which necessitated widening the embankment and the pedestrian tunnel was built through the embankment. Prior to this access was by means of steps on both sides of the steep rail embankment and would have required users to cross the rail tracks. The canal and bridge predate the railway.

This picture is from an album of photographs taken by Thomas Harvey Boycott (1876-1949) who lived with his widowed mother, Fanny Maria, whose family had lived at Handsacre Hall as farmers, together with his unmarried aunt, Sarah Elizabeth Harvey. Harvey was a Clerk at Lichfield District Probate Court and a skilled amateur photographer. The album was a parting gift from Harvey and his mother to the Rev. R.E. Grice-Hutchinson (1885-1976) who was Curate of Armitage with Pipe Ridware 1909-1913.
