Date:June 1911

Description:The Coronation of George the V and his wife Mary as King and Queen took place in Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911.

The procession headed by the Armitage band commenced at this point in Handsacre at 1.30 p.m.and finished at Armitage Lodge, the home of the Rector, the Rev. Sampson, for tea followed by sports and amusements. The programme concluded with a daylight firework display at 9.45 p.m.

The man standing alone far right is the late John Jackson, probably of Clarkes Hayes Farm, Handsacre. In the foreground the man on the left wearing a straw hat is Harvey Boycott of Handsacre Hall. This would suggest that Harvey did not take the photograph although it possibly his camera which he had previously set up and instructed someone to take when he passed into view. A group of girls processing behind the banner can be seen immediately behind the cart.

The large building is the Handsacre Primitive Methodist Chapel, originally known as the Temple which was built in 1894. It is now (2024) Handsacre Methodist Church. At the rear of the chapel along the Lichfield Road, the adjoining building (out of shot) was originally a Sunday School and was built in 1891. A wooden finger post stands at the junction behind the Boy Scouts.

This picture is from an album of photographs taken by Thomas Harvey Boycott (1876-1949) who lived with his widowed mother, Fanny Maria, whose family had lived at Handsacre Hall as farmers, together with his unmarried aunt, Sarah Elizabeth Harvey. Harvey was a Clerk at Lichfield District Probate Court and a skilled amateur photographer. The album was a parting gift from Harvey and his mother to the Rev. R.E. Grice-Hutchinson (1885-1976) who was Curate of Armitage with Pipe Ridware 1909-1913.
