Description:A photograph of a print of Charrington & Co. Ltd.’s Abbey Brewery, Burton-upon-Trent.

Founded in the 18th century in Bethnal Green, Charringtons first came to Burton in 1871 when thay bought the existing Abbey Brewery, located between Abbey Street and Lichfield Street. This was demolished and replaced by a new brewery, at which brewing commenced November 7th 1872. The maltings were built shortly after this date. Charrington sold the Abbey Brewery and transferred production to their Anchor Brewery in London. In 1967, Charrington merged with Bass and Mitchell & Butlers and formed Bass Charrington Limited. The company sold off its brands to Interbrew in 2000.

Photograph from Boots Fine Art Views of Burton, published by Boots Limited in the 1890s. This picture is wrongly identified as the Anchor Brewery, which was Charrington’s London brewery on Mile End Room.
