Description:Pit head gear at Wolstanton Colliery, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The colliery was demolished in the late 1980s and a retail park now stands on the site. Wolstanton Colliery was opened in 1920 and was merged with Sneyd and Hanley in the 1950s and 1960s. The colliery had the deepest coal mining shaft in western Europe and became known as the 'Superpit' of North Staffordshire.
