Description:Pictured at a fundraising event for funds for St. Peter's Church, Broughton at Charnes Hall are, from left to right, Arthur Boulton (Church Warden at St. Peter's) , Mrs Sylvia Friend, Lady Helen Delves Broughton and Major James Friend. Recieving a bouquet of flowers is the Vicar's daughter, Catherine Ayre.

Charnes Hall was built around 1680 and was extended and remodelled in 1720 and then again around 1800. It was the home of the Yonge and Vernon-Yonge families. In 1916 it was purchased by the Hall family who have remained as the oweners ever since. Major James Arthur Friend of the 11th Hussars married Sylvia Byfield Hall of Charnes Hall on 6 December 1947 and the Hall was their home until the late 1960s. Major Friend was a well-known breeder of cattle Lady Helen Delves Broughton lived at Doddington Hall in Cheshire and had family links with nearby Broughton Hall.
