Description:Mr and Mrs John Cooper, Superintendent and Matron of the Miners' Convalescent Home, Rudyard from its opening in 1925. Mr Cooper was President of the North Staffordshire Miners Federation, and his wife was a qualified nurse.
Horton Lodge was built by Stephen Chesters-Thompson in 1890. In 1894 it was bought by Mr W.A.M. Tellwright of Wolstanton, the owner of Sneyd Collieries who extended it and laid out the gardens. Purchased by The North Staffordshire Miners Welfare Association in 1924 it was converted into a Convalescent Home for miners in 1925. It was let to the Workers Educational Association in 1948 for weekend residential courses until 1950. It then became a school for children with special needs that is now known as Horton Lodge Community Special School.
