Description:A postcard view of a winter scene taken at the south end of Rudyard Lake. There were a number of exceptionally cold winters in the decades before the First World War which enabled locals and visitors to skate on the frozen lake. Winters cold enough to freeze Rudyard Lake are now very rare.

Rudyard Lake is a reservoir constructed in 1797 by engineer John Rennie to feed the Caldon Branch of the Trent & Mersey Canal. It is around 2.5 miles long and covers roughly an area of 168 acres. Over the years the lake has been used for numerous leisure activities, including boating, fishing, walking and occasionally skating.
