Description:Lud's Church or Ludchurch is a natural gorge caused by a landslip in Millstone Grit beds on the hillside above Gradbach near the Roaches. It is at least 100 metres (328 feet) long and 18 metres (59 feet) deep.
In the early 15th century the chasm is believed to have sheltered Lollards, followers of early church reformer John Wycliffe. It may have been named after Walter de Lud-Auk, a Lollard leader. High on the left hand wall can be seen 'Lady Lud' a wooden figure. Local legend had it that this was a female ship's figurehead from the ship 'Swithamley' placed there around 1862 by the landowner of the time Philip Brocklehurst. However, SS Swithamley had a male figurehead and was lost at sea off the Cape of Good Hope in 1862, so this seems unlikely. Local tradition also has it that the figure commemorated the death of the daughter of a Lollard preacher.
The site has also been identified with the Green Chapel in the mediaeval poem 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'.
