Description:The Moat House, Tamworth, viewed from the north. Situated in Lichfield Street on the banks the River Tame, this Grade II* listed building is believed to date from 1572 and was built by the Comberford family.
In 1619 the Comberfords hosted the future King Charles I and the ceiling was decorated to show the family’s descent from royalty. The Moat House was used a private mental asylum from 1815 by Dr Robert Woody and family members until 1921. It was then purchased by Dr William Lowson and used as a convalescent home until his retirement in 1950. He offered it as a free gift to Tamworth Council who decided that they could not afford its upkeep. It is now (2023) a public house.
