Description:The old cotton mill at Tutbury dated from the late 18th century. When the mill’s cotton business was transferred to Rocester in 1888, it was adapted in 1890 to crush and grind locally mined gypsum to make plaster. It had a direct rail link to the North Staffordshire Railway branch line between Uttoxeter and Burton-upon-Trent. The mill closed in October 1968 and was demolished in 1972.
In early June 1831, workers engaged in excavations in the River Dove at Tutbury to improve the performance of the nearby cotton mill found great hoards of silver coins on the riverbed.
The postcard is believed to have been published by Sidalls of Burton-upon-Trent. It has a hand-written date of 4 September 1917 on the reverse.
