Description:This postcard view was taken near to the dam wall at the south end of Rudyard Lake.

Rudyard Lake is a reservoir constructed in 1797 by engineer John Rennie to feed the Caldon Branch of the Trent & Mersey Canal. It is around 2.5 miles long and covers roughly an area of 168 acres. Over the years the lake has been used for numerous leisure activities, including boating, fishing and walking.

There are several privately owned Boathouses located on the west shore of the lake which are out of view of the camera in this picture. This scene looks across the lake to the east shore where there is a glimpse of the Earl of Macclesfield Boathouse, built in the 1850s; it is the earliest Boathouse on the lake. Over the years the Boathouse fell into disrepair and around 2004 the Rudyard Lake Trust acquired the lease of the Boathouse. Funding was drawn from several sources and restoration was finished in 2008. The Boathouse is open to the public and the interior has a display which includes the history of the building and the boating history of the lake.

This Stanley Series Real Photograph, ‘One Penny’ postcard was franked on 12 September 1910 in Leek and sent to an address in Llanharan, Glamorgan.
