Description:The Institute was opened in 1911 by Lady Cooper of Shenstone Court in memory of her father, Elias Ashmole Ashmall, a local farmer and churchwarden for 34 years who had died in 1889. Most of the cost was funded by his son-in-law, Sir Richard Powell Cooper, Bt. of Shenstone Court. The site was given by Francis Villiers Forster and Sir Charles Forster Bt. of Lysways Hall, Longdon. It was extended in 1972. It is currently (2023) a Social Club.
Elias Ashmole Ashmall claimed descent from the Lichfield born antiquary, Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) who donated most of his collection of curiosities and artifacts to Oxford University to create the Ashmolen Museum.
The unused postcard published by Lillywhites (1932 Ltd) of Sowerby Bridge is incorrectly identified as the Eastmole Institute in the caption.
