Description:Bill Armison at his leaving presentation at Four Ashes Carbon Works, being presented with an engraved watch by the managing Director, Mr D.G. Trickett. Looking over Bill's shoulder is Wally Turner, the Chief Accountant and behind him is Phil Gollings.

Born 28 August 1910, Bill started work at the United Lamp Black Works at Four Ashes in 1945, eventually becoming senior foreman and later transport manager. When he left in 1967 the works were managed by Columbian International (Britain) Ltd. Bill left to take up the job of steward at Bridgtown Working Men's Club on Walsall Road, Cannock. Unfortunately, he died less than a year later, on 20 August 1968

Founded as United Lamp Black Company Ltd. during the Second World War, the company produced fine carbon powder. It was used in the manufacture of carbon paper for office use, and to create a smooth playing surface on 78rpm and early LP records. It was also an essential component in tyre manufacture, helping to prevent tyre walls overheat, so the company probably supplied the Goodyear tyre factory in Bushbury. Carbon powder was also suppled to GEC in Stafford. During the 1960s it was taken over by a US company, Columbian Carbon. The works closed in 1979.

Since 2005 it has been the site of Four Ashes Industrial Estate.
