Description:A postcard view of a Spread Eagle Inn at Gailey at what is now the busy junction of the A5 towards Shrewsbury on the left and the A449 to Stafford on the right, with a horse and trap in the foreground.

A major road widening scheme took place in the area from around 1932-1934. The Spread Eagle was demolished and a replacement built further back from the road to make way for a road traffic island to be created at the crossroads. Parts of the redevelopment included sections of dual-carriageway to be constructed on the Stafford to Wolverhampton Road. With the increase in commercial traffic and motor cars this scheme was also expected to improve traffic flow through Penkridge.

This postcard was franked in Penkridge on 11 April 1903 and sent to an address in Walsall.
