Date:8th of August 1910

Description:A postcard photograph taken at Gnosall Wakes in 1910. Sports and entertainments took place on the Moors, a field by Gnosall railway station, but the attractions in this photograph were in a nearby field at the Royal Oak. Pictured are children having donkey rides and in the background is Carloman's Steam Riding School, a merry-go-round.

The ride, a typical set of Gallopers, was built by the Tewkesbury firm of Thomas Walker, and was travelled by Harry and William Carloman, who travelled the Gallopers in the Staffordshire area. Harry died in 1925 and his brother William in 1947. The ride was packed away during World War II. After the war they opened in various parks, spending many years at Pleasureland at Southport. In more recent years they were at Trentham Gardens, but were sold around 2010 and are now at the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

Postcard photographed by Harry Osbourne of Woodseaves.
