Description:This postcard view of the Newport branch of the Shropshire Union Canal looks towards Forton.

The Newport branch of the canal was little used after 1920 and closed by Act of Parliament in 1944, later it was backfilled. In 2000 the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust was formed to bring the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals back to navigation. The Trust aims to protect, conserve and improve the route of the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals, and branches, for the benefit of the community and the environment, with the ultimate goal of restoring a continuous navigable waterway linking Norbury Junction to Shrewsbury.

This ‘Perfection Series’ postcard was franked at Camp Hill D.O. Birmingham on 11 August 1908 and sent to an address in Wrexham
