Description:A postcard view of Cowley Tunnel on the Shropshire Union Canal near Gnosall.

On the reverse of the postcard there is a message which is thought to have been sent between 1940 and 1942 during the Second World War, however, the picture of Cowley Tunnel was obviously taken much earlier. It was probably posted in an envelope because there is no destination address, stamp, date or franking mark.

The message was sent from Southolme, Coton, Gnosall, to: “Dear Emma & Harry, just a few lines to wish you Both a Happy Xmas. I was anxious to know how you were going on but Tom told me things had been a bit quiet & Jerry had not visited you which I was pleased to hear. He dropped 11 Bombs at Bromstead but did not do any damage; he was very near to us that night no one went to bed. Love to Both, Harriett”.
