Description:Boys' brass band at Standon Boys' Farm Home.
The home in Weston Lane, Standon Bridge, near Eccleshall was founded by the Waifs and Strays Society in 1885. This was the second Boys' Home operated by the Society. Later this same year it was certified as an Industrial School which enabled it to take in boys sentenced by magistrates to detention in such an establishment. Initially for up to 50 boys aged between 10 and 14, building extensions in 1889 and 1892 increased its capacity to 90. In 1908 the upper age limit was increased to 16. Prominence was given to farming, gardening and animal husbandry but carpentry and engineering were taught.
In 1938 it was certified as an Intermediate Approved School. The property later became Standon Bowers Special School. In more recent times, the site has been occupied by the Standon Bowers Outdoor Education Centre.
