Description:Born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1882, Robert Arnold was apprenticed as a shoeing smith to his blacksmith father, but joined the Staffordshire Constabulary in 1904. In his early police career he worked as a plain clothes constable and detective in Burton-upon-Trent. In September 1920 he was promoted to Sergeant and took up a post at Trentham. A further promotion to Inspector in 1924 saw him move to Stockton Brook and just prior to his post as Superintendent of Stone Police he had been working at Willenhall. On leaving Stone he was Superintendent of Burton Police. He died suddenly in August 1934, aged 52, a few weeks after injuring his leg. His son, also named Robert, also had a long career with Staffordshire Police.

This postcard portrait was photographed by Stone photographer Phillip Dutton, of 63 High Street, Stone.
