Description:A postcard view of Cheadle's Market Cross with a decorative lantern on top of the capping stone. The Market Cross stands on the High Street at the junction with Cross Street. It consists of an octagonal sandstone shaft on steps and probably dates from the 17th century. In the background, on the left there is a part view of the Wheatsheaf Hotel, a grade II listed building, originally known as the George Inn. The Wheatsheaf closed in 2006 and later reopened as a J. D. Wetherspoon’s public house. On the right is the Bull’s Head public house, in later years this became a branch of Barclays Bank which eventually moved to a different site in Cheadle and then the premises changed use on several occasions. This postcard was franked on 3 August 1906 in Wetley Rocks and sent to an address in Northenden, Cheshire.
