Description:A postcard view of the entrance to the Memorial Recreation Ground on Tean Road, Cheadle. The gateposts have panels affixed bearing the names of local military personnel who had fallen in The Great War (1914-1918). These panels replaced original ones which had been mounted on a nearby plinth which had been surmounted with a field gun from the war. When the memorial was unveiled it was obvious that the gun was of German origin and its unpopularity led to it being scrapped around 1923. It is possible that this plinth is that which can be seen through the gateway.

The panels were subsequently remounted onto a new war memorial unveiled in 1949, situated to the right of the plinth in this photograph. The gates and arch were damaged by a lorry in 2022 and had to be removed to extract the lorry.
