Factory Gate Shot, Stoke-on-Trent

Date:1900 - 1910 (c.)

Description:This is typical of an early one-shot film – called “factory gate” shots. They’re filming workers coming out of work. This is King Street in Stoke-on-Trent and these are the railway workers coming out of the Kerr Stewart locomotive works in Stoke. The street is still identifiable – the bridge in the background is still there. And the film also shows a tramcar in the shot, a railway locomotive going over the bridge and workers and children coming out. It’s interesting to see the street traffic and how people are dressed. And in this shot you can see a lady giving out leaflets – this is probably to advertise a showing of the film at a local hall so that people would come and see themselves on the silver screen.

This film also features in the documentary; “At the Pictures – the story of cinemas in the Potteries”, produced by Ray Johnson.
