Date:21st of March 1956

Description:Sir George Nelson, Chairman of the English Electric Co. with Georgy Malenkov, Minister of Power Stations, during a visit to English Electric's Stafford factory in March 1956. Between them are John Sully, General Manager, and a Russian interpreter. Earlier in the day Sir George Nelson and Georgy Malenkov had lunch at the Crown Hotel in Stone. After the factory visit they returned to the Crown Hotel for their evening meal.

In 1953, Malenkov was very briefly Soviet leader after the death of Stalin, eventually being succeeded by Nikita Khrushchev. A year after his visit to Stafford and Stone, Melenkov organised a failed coup to oust Khrushchev and was exiled to Kazakhstan and retired from politics shortly afterwards, eventually returning to Moscow to live a quiet life until his death in 1988.
