Description:This postcard view shows three advertising signs which were located at the Spot Gate Inn, Hilderstone Road, Spot Acre.
The top sign states “This gate hangs well & hinders none, walk in refresh yourself, pay & travel on”. The middle sign advertises ‘Parkers Ales’ which were supplied by Parker’s Brewery of Burslem. Parker’s was taken over in 1949 by Ind Coope and Allsopp and later became known as Ansell’s Burslem Brewery. Brewing ceased from the Burslem premises in 1963. The lower sign advertises ‘Sandeman’s Port on sale here’ which was supplied from the Sandeman port wine cellars in Portugal.
Latterly, the Spot Gate Inn has been known for the Pullman railway car used as the pub's restaurant. In 1969 the landlord, David Fry, bought the car at a British Railways auction. It was built in 1928 and was formerly part of the Bournemouth Belle.
