The RAPTC (Royal Army Physical Training Corps) has undergone several changes in title since forming in 1860 as the Army Gymnastic Staff (AGS). These reflect its changing role and importance in the British Army. Under every title, it has worn the crossed swords and crown cap badge and has carried out its primary role of maintaining the fitness and fighting capacity of the British soldier. From 1860 it was known as the Army Gymnastic Staff. In 1919 the title changed to Army Physical Training Staff, in 1940 to Army Physical Training Corps, and finally in 2010 to Royal Army Physical Training Corps.
