Description:The Church of St. Mary and St. Chad contains four tombs of the Giffard family. The oldest is of Sir John Giffard, who died in 1556, and his two wives Jane and Elizabeth. Depicted around the tomb are their 18 children. There is also the tomb of Sir Thomas Giffard, who died in 1560, and his two wives, Dorothy and Ursula, and their 17 children. The third tomb is of Sir John Giffard and his wife Joyce with their 14 children, and the fourth is of Walter Giffard and his wife Philippa, who died in 1636.
The Chillington estate has been owned by the Giffard family since the 12th century, and the hall remains the family's seat. As devout Catholics the family supported the King during the Civil War. Charles Giffard was instrumental in Charles II's escape from the Battle of Worcester, taking the King to Whiteladies and Boscobel.
