Description:This view shows the remains of a Georgian ice house close to Trentham Lake.
During 2016, the Trentham Estate was carrying out a project to re-discover the landscape that Lancelot “Capability” Brown created from 1759 to 1780 when he was employed by the Estate. While clearing trees on the western side of the lake, the Estate gardeners discovered the remains of a Georgian ice house and also a Georgian triple boat house by the lake.
There is also another ice house which was used by the Estate, it was built in the 1840s and located on Park Drive. During the winter gardeners at the hall would convey the ice from the frozen lake at Trentham, and transfer it to the ice house, where it would be packed tight and insulated with straw to slow down the melting process. The ice house has a brick lined chamber. The ice would be used to preserve and prepare food for the household.
Thank you to the Trentham Estate and the Stoke-on-Trent Museum Archaeological Society for this information.
