Description:A postcard view looking north along the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stone. On the left is Stone Union Workhouse.

Stone parish workhouse was originally built in 1793 for about 60 inmates. After the creation of Stone Poor Law Union in 1838 the existing building was extensively enlarged to provide accommodation for 300 inmates. On the formation of the National Health Service in 1948 it became Trent Hospital. It closed in the early 1990s and was then sympathetically redeveloped for residential use.

This postcard was published by William Shaw of Burslem.
