Description:The stones forming the embankment to Bagnall’s bridge in Castle Street, Stafford, are believed to have been taken from the old railway sleepers of the Grand Junction Railway when the track was updated through Stafford and replaced by timber sleepers in the 1840s to get increased speeds on the system. Some of the old stones were then broken up and recycled as support to the road over the bridge and they remain to this day (July 2021). The fixing points are clearly visible on many of the stones and similar ones were used in Brunswick Terrace.
