Description:This picture shows numbers 1 and 2 Railway Street, Stafford which at the time of the photograph were the premises of 'C Herbert & Company'.

By 1911 Albert Bentley had opened his first shop at 1 and 2 Railway Street, operating as A. Bentley & Co., Grocers, Bakers and Provision Merchants. Later the shop was occupied by the Co-op for several years and subsequently it was sold to Cyril Herbert who moved from Wooding’s Yard around 1970, under the name of ‘Stafford Hoover Service Station’ as agents of Hoover Ltd. The business expanded into other brands as manufacturer’s policies changed and servicing and spare parts became necessary for a larger volume of appliances. The trading name was then changed to ‘Herbert & Company’ to reflect the diversity of stock, the company, by that time had incorporated several other agencies, although Hoover still remained a prominent account. Due to retirement the site was sold in August 2014 and redeveloped as housing.
