It was reported in the Staffordshire Newsletter on Saturday 28 May, that there were few better settings for the play than the magnificent interior of the Norman Church of St. Chad. The Rev. G A Wroe introduced the production of “A Sleep of Prisoners” on the evening of Tuesday 24 May. The play dealt with the emotions of prisoners of war locked in a church in enemy territory. The root of the play is the attempt of the prisoners to find a meaning to life in the modern scientific age.
The play was produced by Eleanora Fenn (Chairman of the Theatre Guild) who made dramatic use of the aisles, choir and a wide variety of lighting effects. The organist was Agnes Jones and lighting effects were by Phillip Michaelis, assisted by Geoffrey Kidd. Proceeds for the production which was also performed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings were for St. Chad’s Restoration Fund.
