Description:Mr J H P Oxspring (County Director of Education) and Mrs Oxspring are pictured inspecting some of the interesting pictures at the sixth annual art exhibition by Staffordshire Artists, after opening the exhibition at the Borough Art Gallery at the Green, on Saturday 21 May in the afternoon. With them, to the right, are Mr H Dyson (Borough Librarian) and Councillor Mrs E M Williams (Chairman of the Borough Library and Arts Committee) who presided. A vote of thanks to Mr Oxspring was expressed by Mr O F Bradley.

Mr Oxspring expressed the hope that Stafford would become the Mecca of artists in Staffordshire when he opened the exhibition. The annual art exhibition was open to anyone in the County and represented the work of young and old, the amateur week-end painter and the professional. There were 56 exhibits on view, chosen from a total of 100 submitted. There was work by Keith Gretton, Alston E Emery and sixteen year old Pierre Fowell who was the youngest contributor. Local artists included Clive Wilson, Dyonese Haszard, P J Oakley, Peter Green, David Bethel, W C Ball, Ethel M Smith, Stanley Smith and D C Squires.
