Description:This postcard view shows a group of Post Office workers at the G.P.O. (General Post Office) Sorting Office in Stafford. Note the high number of women, there are 32 in this group photograph alongside two male postal workers. During the First World War women took on the work of the men who had left to fight. If you recognise anyone in the picture please contact us.

On the lower right of the picture there is an inscription confirming that this picture was taken by Paul Weiss of Castleberg Studio, Stafford.

The Castleberg Studio, 134 Newport Road (formerly 51 Newport Road) was the studio and home of a number of Stafford photographers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These were: David Brigham, from about 1870 to 1882; David Bordley, from 1892 to 1898; Frederick Stoate, from 1899 to 1906; John Vandyke, from 1908 to 1914; Paul Wise (formerly Weiss) from 1914 to 1928.
