Description:H.R.H. Princess Alice, Duchess of Athlone performed the unveiling of Hednesford's War memorial on 9th November, 1922. The memorial iis located on the edge of Hednesford Common on land donated by the Marquis of Anglesey.
The Duchess was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and had German titles, as did other members of the Royal family until they abandoned their use in 1917. Her brother held a commission in the German Army and did not relinquish them and so was stripped of his British titles instead.
Her husband Colonel (Hon. Brigadier General) Lord Athlone stands behind her. The officer facing is thought to be local Territorial Army officer, Colonel R. S. Williamson. The memorial was dedicated by the Archdeacon of Stafford.
