Description:Archeologists are pictured here during the excavation of the castle site in Newcastle. These excavations discovered old masonry from the castle, the foundations of a gatehouse in John of Gaunt's Road, and sections of the castle's drawbridge.
The castle is believed to have been built during the 12th century and was situated around Pool Dam. By the 1630s however the castle was mainly derelict. The castle site was converted into the Queen Elizabeth Gardens by 1944.
