Description:This postcard view shows the former Crown Hotel also known as the Crown Inn at Stone Cross, Penkridge. The Crown was an Eley’s, Stafford Brewery Ltd. inn. It stood near to the junction with Pinfold Lane and the Main Road, close to the George and Fox and on the opposite side of the road to the White Hart.

The Staffordshire Advertiser Newspaper on 10 May 1931 had a notice inviting tenders for the demolition of the main building of the Crown Inn due to a road widening scheme. This major project took place around 1932–1934, parts of which included sections of dual carriageway on the Stafford to Wolverhampton Road. With the increase in commercial traffic and greater use of motor cars this would improve traffic flow through Penkridge. However, it caused the demolition of many houses, the Crown Inn, the old George and Fox Inn and part of the Stone Cross area.

Early 19th century coachmen thought the Penkridge section on the London and Liverpool route was the most difficult due to the narrowness of the roads in the town centre.
