Description:This postcard view shows a crowd of people positioned by Creed’s Corner shop at the junction of Old Road and New Road in Armitage. They are thought to be posing for the camera before an Armitage walking match commences.

At the time of this photograph the corner shop (in the background) was run by the Creed family who came to Armitage in around 1874 from the Potteries. From the 1890s Mrs Creed ran the grocer's shop on this corner site in the village and her husband Thomas was a packer and later a carter at the Edward Johns & Co, pottery nearby. By 1900 the Creeds were mentioned in a local newspaper as providing catering for various functions in the village.

Most of the buildings in this view remain although many chimneys have been removed. Currently (December 2020) the shop is known as Carthy’s fishing tackle shop.
