Date:19th of June 1939

Description:Mr Bert Heywood, auctioneer, selling pigs at the Smithfield Cattle Market, which was off Friars Street. The market was opened in 1871. Prior to that, livestock sales took place in the town centre. The market closed in the early 1990s and the site is now (2020) occupied by Morrisons supermarket. In the 1930s livestock auctions were held by Heywood & Sons.
