Description:This postcard view looks south-west along Market Street towards the junction with Bird Street in Lichfield.

The house on the left became a museum dedicated to the life and works of Dr Samuel Johnson in 1901 and is now (August 2020) known as the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and Bookshop. Built for his parents in 1708, Dr. Johnson lived there for the first 27 years of his life and is most famous for writing the first comprehensive English dictionary, but was also known for being a great wit and conversationalist. Second from the right is Frisby’s shoe shop which had several branches in the area. In later years the family owned chain increased to 156 stores and was sold to Ward White in 1982. Some of the other buildings in this scene have been replaced, yet several remain (August 2020) although their ground floors have changed over the years.

This postcard was franked in Walsall Wood on 25 July 1914 and sent to an address in London.
