Description:A postcard view of the Market Square in Lichfield, also known as Market Place. On the left is the statue of Dr Samuel Johnson. He is most famous for writing the first comprehensive English dictionary, but was also known for being a great wit and conversationalist. Just behind the statue is a building which around 1900-1901 became a Museum dedicated to the life and works of Samuel Johnson and currently (July 2020) it is known as the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and Bookshop.
On the right several of buildings have been demolished and replaced by retail and finance premises, but many of the other buildings in this scene remain (July 2020) although their ground floors have changed over the years.
