Description:Mr Eric B Holden, airport manager at Wolverhampton with one of the very first Piper Cherokee aircraft imported to the United Kingdom. It belonged to Don Everall. On the left is a Piper Colt.

Wolverhampton Airport was opened at Pendeford on 27 June 1938 and had grass runways, hangers and a control tower. The Boulton Paul Aircraft factory, established nearby in Pendeford in 1934 and extended in 1937, used it for test flights. During World War II it was used as a base for No.28 EFTS with up to 108 Tiger Moths. Don Everall Aviation took over management from 1953 and ran some scheduled airline flights with a fleet of Dakotas. In April 1970 an incoming plane crashed into a house in Redhurst Drive, Fordhouses, killing both pilots and an occupant of the house, an indcident which hastened its planned closure. The airport was closed on 31 December 1970.
