Date:1917 - 1918 (c.)

Description:Women workers at the Thomas Piggott & Co.'s works in Tipton during World War I. Probably taken around 1917-1918, these war workers are engaged in heavy duty industrial activities traditionally undertaken by male workers, in this case driving rivets into metal plates. These plates in turn form large water tanks for military use, two of which are known to have been used at the military camps on Cannock Chase during this period.

Thomas Piggott & Co were founded at Spring Hill, Birmingham in 1822. The company later became a subsidiary of Horseley Bridge and Engineering Co. Ltd. of Dudley Port, Tipton, which was renamed Horseley Bridge and Thomas Piggott in 1933. The company was taken over by John Thompson in 1968.
