Description:A postcard view of the Manor House on the High Street in Uttoxeter. The building is also known as Uttoxeter House and sometimes as Lord Gardner’s House, this being the birthplace of Admiral Alan Gardner (1742-1809).
This large mansion has many 19th century alterations and additions. The core of the house is 16th century or possibly earlier, but little remains except for the base of a large central chimney stack, now surmounted by later chimneys. The front of the house is of two storeys of red brick with stone dressings and is mostly 18th century in date. The interior is largely decorated in "period" style but retains the original 17th staircase with added modern finials. There is a "priest's hole" close to the central chimney stack.
